I’ll be working on further revision, and filling in details as they become available. Also, as information about the various “second” lines, such as Guildhall, Everyman, Astor, etc. I’m not a collector of Comoy pipes specifically, but enough of them have passed through my collection over the past 20 years for me to have gotten some sense of determining at least the relative age of them. About a year ago, I started trying to make some real sense of this, and though this is going to be a lengthy project, involving much more research and “pipe archaeology,” I thought I’d share my current thoughts and speculations, and solicit any additional information which must exist out there in Cyberia. Much of this article is extracted from something I had originally posted on ASP. Over time, I’ll refine and update it as new facts find their way to me.

The next pipe on the work table came to me from one of our estate purchases. The stamping is the significant marker that points this out for me. The finish had a lot of grime ground into the smooth finish on the bowl and some darkening around the sides of the bowl. The bowl was heavily caked and had an overflow of thick lava on the top of the rim. It was hard to know what the rim top and inner edge of the bowl looked like under the grime.
The stem was calcified, oxidized and had tooth chatter and large deep tooth marks on the top and underside but the surface of the button was surprisingly free of damage. There was a three part inlaid C on the left of the taper stem. The pipe had promise but it was very dirty. Jeff took photos of the pipe before he started his cleanup work.
He took photos of the rim top and bowl to give a clear picture of the thickness of the cake and the overflow of lava on the rim top. It is hard to know if there is damage to the inner edge of the bowl because of the lava coat.

There is always the possibility that the silver bands may have been ordered in by the factory in batches and therefore could have been used up over several months and be a year out of date by the time they were applied to the pipe.
It can als have been attached afterwords as a repair to fix a crack etc. This is a list with examples of hallmarked pipes to illustrate the different nomenclature to be found:. This shape 42 Bent Billiard is no exception. The pipe had been quite gently used before it came to my worktable. The exterior of briar and stem were greasy and dirty, and a film of lava covered most of the rim. It was hard to tell how much cake was in the bowl as the chamber walls were lined with a fair bit of the last tobacco smoked.
The stem was in exceptional estate condition under the grime — very little oxidation, and almost no tooth marks at the bit. The top side was slightly rough, and the bottom side had just a hint of one shallow tooth dent. Compared to most of the stems I deal with, this one was nearly pristine. The superb condition extended to the stampings, which were crisp and clean.
This article on Pipedia. Apart from that, I have nothing to work with to date this pipe, though the use of a fill-free piece of briar for a seconds line would suggest to me that this Bent Billiard was produced closer to than As usual, I began work on this cleanup by popping the stem into an Oxyclean bath. While the stem had been soaking, I had been working on the stummel.
